Mt. Zion Research Building, School of Medicine
San Francisco, California

The School of Medicine Research Building contains 51,363 assignable square feet of research and research support space on four floors above grade and 9,903 assignable square feet of laboratories in the basement floor.  The building design was inspired by a neighboring building designed by modernist architect Eric Mendolson.

A central landscape court, also inspired by Eric Mendolson, is the building’s outdoor focus.  The central on structure courtyard is one of three “Idea Exchange Spaces” programmed for the building.  Located in a mixed-use neighborhood of San Francisco, the site is adjacent to three busy urban streets and three adjoining residential neighborhoods.  Additional landscape work included streetscape design and collaboration with neighborhood groups regarding street tree selections.
