The goal of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Replacement Project is to set a new and higher standard for hospital design in the 21st century. The project has been designed using the principles of patient respect, patient dignity and patient control. To that end, the design process has involved a highly collaborative effort among: client / owner representatives, user groups, design / engineering team and contractor / construction team. This has enabled the development of a hospital project with state of the art technology, flexible, sensitive design and effective construction cost management. When completed the 23 acre campus will contain a complex of buildings: a 243 bed hospital; a professional office building, a parking structure for 800 autos and surface parking for 600 autos.
The project is situated at a prominent site on El Camino Real, at the gateway to the City of Burlingame. A major goal of the landscape site design has been the development of a campus setting that reflects both a state-of-the-art healthcare facility, as well as the ambiance of the town of Burlingame. A pedestrian allee from El Camino Real articulates a pedestrian scale presence on El Camino while vehicular and emergency entrances are located mid site. Protected outdoor seating areas, adjacent to all building entries and drop off areas have been provided for staff and visitor use. The hospital building wraps around a ground floor serenity court which creates a quiet ambiance for contemplation and respite. Designed to provide outdoor settings for acute care patients, visitors and staff, open air landscape courts adjacent to care units: Birthing Center, Intensive Care, Skilled Nursing, Adult Mental Health, Adolescent Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, have been provided within the hospital building at the second and third floor levels.
