Kaiser Replacement Housing

Located at the western portion of the Western Addition Neighborhood, Kaiser Replacement Housing is a combined effort of Tabernacle Community Development Corporation and Kaiser Permanente to create needed housing for senior citizens in the Western Addition. Providing a convenient location for senior living, the new multi story building tucks into a quiet residential street and is conveniently located near public transportation, neighborhood stores and shops along Divisadero Street.
The design vision for the site and landscape development was to create a central space for residential gatherings, to enhance privacy and bring a sense of tranquility to the project. As such, the central focus of the project is a 5,519 square foot open court, located over ground level parking. The court provides garden views from the units, sunny exposures, a central seating area and easterly views to San Francisco’s Civic Center. The design of hardscape areas and furnishings were carefully detailed and coordinated with the building design and colors.
Designed for low maintenance and low water consumption, the terrace features simple, drought tolerant plantings, furnishings and colorful paving design. The court also features two separate outdoor areas screening between the site and adjacent residential properties, preservation of existing street tree plantings and landscaping of street frontages. The design process involved extensive collaboration with OCII, City and County of San Francisco Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure.
